Harare, Zimbabwe – Bulawayo based jazz musician, Jeys Marabini, is promising fireworks at his debut appearance at the Winter Jazz Festival to be held in Harare. Marabini revealed that he will perform at the festival on Sunday alongside award-winning guitarist and producer, Louis Mhlanga.
“I am very happy that I will share the stage with Louis Mhlanga, he’s definitely; I am also happy to get the chance to play at the festival. I promise that people are going to enjoy my music and am looking forward to the festival,” said Marabini in an exclusive interview with NewsDay.
Marabini, who began his music career in 1991 has toured all over the world, performing at some of the world’s renowned music festivals such as WOMAD, Lamatree, Glastonbury and Edinburg.
Marabini was the first Zimbabwean to establish a music promotions company in Europe called Equator Company. The company managed to sign some big names in the Zimbabwean music industry including, Albert Nyathi, Marshall Munhumumwe and the Four Brothers, Imbizo and Siyaya Arts.
Marabini’s debut album, Emarabini was well received with the video Emarabini being voted the video of the year at the Zimbabwe Music Awards (ZIMA) 2003. His second and third album Thuthukani Ngothando, Sound of Today and Tomorrow respectively, have all commanded good responses from the local and international market.
His fourth album, One Time by far the biggest highlight of his musicianship, has sold like candy and featured a video Ezinangeni that received much airtime on local television. He also has a fifth album titled “Izenzo”, which featured Nana Coyote of popular South Africa jazz band “Stimela”
Marabini said that playing at the Winter Jazz Festival a crowning achievement. He expressed confidence that his shows in Harare will endear him to music fans in the city.
“My music is original; I mean serious business when it comes to my work because it’s my profession and I don’t take my fans for granted so people have to come in big numbers to witness that,” he said.
Marabini revealed that he is currently working on a new scorcher of an album that will be launched later this year.
