Harare, Zimbabwe – Despite having beautiful and sunny summer days, Harare lacks open air family events and exhibitions. You can almost count on one hand the number of open-air events that are held in the city outside the ubiquitous music shows.
Realizing this gap, well-traveled entrepreneur, Debbie Peters, decided to spice things up a little bit and put together a Harare Food, Wine and Home Expo at the Borrowdale Park – Borrowdale Race Course. Peters who currently resides in Johannesburg, South Africa, says that she was inspired by the galore of expos and exhibitions held in that city during summertime that she decided to put together the Harare Food, Wine and Home Expo.
“I realized that Harare has very few outdoors summer events. In Johannesburg, there are so many things that take place during the summer period. So, I thought, it would be nice to have something similar to the events that they have in Johannesburg,” said Peters who worked at Wall Street in the US for almost ten years before coming back to invest her skills in the motherland.
According to Peters, the upmarket business, leisure and lifestyle show will feature exhibitions, music and games for the whole family. Exhibitors will include food manufacturers, caterers, chefs, restaurants, wine estates, beverage distributors, interior decorators, furniture suppliers, kitchen companies, paint manufacturers, home appliance companies among others.
Leading exhibitors that will participate in the event include Nandos, Delta Brands, Heineken, O’Hagans Pub, Lonrho hotels, Cape Legends Wines South Africa, said Peters.
She added that she was not fazed by the lack of such events in Harare, and instead only saw the opportunity to fill in an apparent gap. She also credited the entrepreneurial spirit in her family for making the bold decision to host the inaugural expo.
